Marigolds and Moonstone: A Ritual with October’s Elemental Allies

Learn more about these elemental allies and remedies.

October is not just a month—it’s a hinge in the wheel of the year. A liminal passage where the veil lifts, and the ancestral field becomes palpable. For those of us who walk with intention, this is a time to listen closely, to work with allies who amplify remembrance, and to engage in healing that honors both the seen and unseen. Two elemental allies rise to meet us in this sacred season: Moonstone, the crystal of maternal healing and intuitive depth, and Marigold, the flower of remembrance, protection, and ancestral connection.

Let’s explore their energetic anatomy, cultural lore, and practical magic.

Moonstone: The Crystal of Cycles, Memory, and Maternal Healing

Mineral Composition: Moonstone is a variety of orthoclase feldspar with layers of albite, which create its signature shimmer (adularescence).

Geometric Shape: Monoclinic crystal system—a structure that supports emotional fluidity and layered healing.

Metaphysical Healing Properties:

  • Emotional Healing: Soothes emotional turbulence, especially around mother wounds and feminine lineage.
  • Intuition & Dreamwork: Enhances psychic perception, lucid dreaming, and connection to lunar rhythms.
  • Energetic Use: Crystal therapists, witches, and Reiki practitioners use moonstone to balance yin energy, support hormonal cycles, and open the crown and third eye chakras.

Traditional & Modern Use:

  • In India, moonstone is a sacred stone gifted to lovers and used in wedding rituals.
  • In Roman times, it was worn for protection and prophecy.
  • Today, it’s a favorite for Reiki healing, crystal grids, and ancestral meditation.

Marigold: The Flower of the Dead, the Living, and the Remembered

Botanical Lore:

  • Known as Tagetes, marigolds are sacred in Mexican Día de los Muertos traditions, where their vibrant petals and pungent aroma guide spirits home.
  • In Aztec culture, marigolds were used to honor the dead and protect the living.
  • In Hindu rituals, marigolds adorn altars and deities, symbolizing purity and divine connection.

Healing Properties:

  • Energetic Use: Clears stagnant energy, protects sacred space, and invokes ancestral presence.
  • Emotional Use: Supports grief processing, heart healing, and spiritual remembrance.

Forms of Use:

  • Fresh: Place petals on altars or graves; use in baths for energetic cleansing, run through aura to clear energetic debris.
  • Macerated Oil: Infuse dried petals in carrier oil (like jojoba or olive) for 4–6 weeks. Use for anointing the heart, womb, or third eye during ancestral rituals.
  • Dried: Burn as incense, add to sachets, or steep in teas for gentle emotional support.

Día de los Muertos & Other Traditions

  • Modern Celebrations:
  • Altars (ofrendas) are built with photos, candles, marigolds, and offerings of food and drink.
  • Families gather to honor ancestors, share stories, and invite their spirits to visit.
  • Other Cultures:
  • Samhain (Celtic): A fire festival marking the new year and honoring the dead.
  • Obon (Japan): Lanterns guide spirits home; families clean graves and offer food.
  • Pitru Paksha (India): Rituals and food offerings are made to ancestors for blessings.

These traditions remind us that ancestral connection is not just remembrance—it’s relationship.

Ritual: Moonstone & Marigold for Ancestral Healing

Intention: To connect with maternal lineage, release inherited patterns, and reclaim intuitive power.

You’ll Need:

  • A moonstone (preferably white or peach)
  • Fresh or dried marigold petals
  • Marigold-infused oil
  • A candle (white or orange)
  • If attuned to reiki and include symbols into your practice; Invoke Reiki Symbol Ren So Mai (pronounced LEN-SO -MY) through visualization, or drawing the symbol on your hand chakras, heart chakra and/or root chakras - Your imagination is your only limitation. See the bottom of this blog for an example of Ren So Mai I practice and teach.

Steps:

  1. Create Sacred Space: Cleanse with smoke, energy or sound. Place moonstone and marigold blossoms in a bowl in front of you to start.
  2. Anoint: Use marigold oil to anoint your heart, feet, and third eye. Say: “I open up to the wisdom of my lineage.”
  3. Invoke Ren So Mai: Draw the symbol over your body or visualize it spiraling through your aura and timeline. If you feel called to use more symbols like HSZSN or SHK, follow your in intuition. Affirm: “Through space and time, I heal what was once hidden and hindering. I awaken dormant strengths and gifts to further my spiritual journey with ease and grace.”
  4. Meditate: Hold moonstone and sit with marigold petals in your hands; Keeping the bowl close for placing the stones blooms down and scrying. Invite ancestral messages, visions, or emotions to rise and filter through your psychic senses. Trust and record what you receive to review later.
  5. Close to Connection: Offer gratitude and appreciation for the ancestral wisdom that came through you today. Burn a few petals or bury them in the earth as a sign of release. Cleanse your moonstone, room and body with reiki, smoke, or sound. Again, follow your traditions and insights.

Master's Side Note: Every thought, insight, smell, chill, sound, or other sensory cues are relevant. Write anything and everything down. Validation comes upon review, or in time to be revealed in another way. You won't miss it.
