How to Become a Medium: A Simplified Pathway Back to Your Own Spirit (For Seekers, Empaths & the Spiritually Called)

Have you ever been drawn to learn mediumship yourself?

Mediumship Training in Olds, Alberta, Mediumship Classes in Central Alberta

If you’ve ever wondered how to become a medium, how to develop your intuitive gifts, or whether you’re experiencing a genuine spiritual awakening, you’re in the right place. Mediumship isn’t reserved for the chosen few — it’s a learnable skill, a relationship with subtle energy, and a pathway of self‑development that anyone can walk.

Some people feel a deep, unmistakable call toward spirit work. Others arrive here through curiosity, synchronicity, or the desire to understand their intuition. And many begin this journey during grief, searching for connection, healing, or meaning.

Wherever you fall, this path is available to you.

As someone who has moved from surface‑level intuition into the depths of true mediumship, I’ve learned that the real pathway is far simpler — and far more human — than most teachers make it seem. If you’ve ever felt gatekept, confused, or overwhelmed by fragmented teachings, you’re not alone. The spiritual industry can be mysterious by design, but mediumship doesn’t need to be.

This guide will walk you through a clear, grounded, realistic pathway to developing your mediumship gifts — whether you’re a beginner, an empath, or someone who feels called to serve others through spirit. So let’s take a look at what it realistically takes to become a medium.

1. Intention: Why Do You Want to Walk This Path?

Before anything else, you must understand why you’re here.

Your intention reveals your level of commitment and the direction your development will naturally take. Most people fall into one of three groups:

  • The Called — those who feel a deep, inner pull toward spirit work.
  • The Curious — those exploring their gifts without a specific destination yet.
  • The Grieving — those seeking connection, closure, or healing after loss.

There is no wrong doorway into mediumship. But knowing your “why” will help to shape your personal journey into this aspect of life.

2. Identify Your Current Level: Psychic, Intuitive, or Medium

These words get tossed around interchangeably, but they actually describe depth of natural talent, practice and layers of experience.

Here’s the simplest way to understand the spectrum:

• Psychic

  • Picks up on energy in the present moment
  • Senses when something is “off”
  • Knows who’s calling before the phone rings
  • Feels eyes on them before they turn
  • Can perceive energy but struggles to interpret or diagnose it

• Intuitive

  • More refined perception
  • Can diagnose what subtle energy is showing them
  • Reads energy in bodies, spaces, and objects with ease
  • Begins to sense spiritual guides and different layers of density
  • May struggle with reading deeper layers of energy or timelines

• Medium

  • Master-level channeler
  • Channels through space and time
  • Diagnoses the what, when, where, why, and how of energy
  • Differentiates between layers of guides: loved ones, elementals, angels, deities, ect
  • Reads past, present, and potential futures with clarity

Here’s the truth most teachers won’t tell you:

Everyone is psychic. Anyone can become intuitive. And mediumship is simply the refined, practiced extension of these abilities.

Different philosophies use different words — channel, mystic, reader — but they all point to the same spectrum of connection.

3. Lifestyle & Energetic Hygiene: The Foundation Most People Skip

This is where many aspiring mediums make their first mistake: They try to read energy without tending to their own first.

Your physical body and energetic field are the instruments through which spirit communicates. If either is distorted, exhausted, or neglected, your readings will be unclear.

In my mediumship training, we begin with a full chakra and aura overhaul. This naturally leads to physical shifts — better habits, clearer routines, healthier choices — because the body and energy field are inseparable.

To develop clean, accurate mediumship, you must:

  • Support your physical health
  • Maintain strong energetic hygiene
  • Address emotional and lifestyle imbalances
  • Keep your field clear, grounded, and stable

You cannot read clearly through static.

4. Learn Your Intuitive Channels

Mediumship becomes infinitely easier when you understand how you receive subtle energy.

The four primary intuitive channels are:

  • Clairvoyance — clear seeing (symbols, images, flashes, visions)
  • Clairsentience — clear feeling (sensations, emotions, physical cues)
  • Clairaudience — clear hearing (words, tones, phrases, internal or external)
  • Claircognizance — clear knowing (instant understanding without logic)

When someone calls themselves a “clairvoyant,” it simply means their strongest channel is sight. But not all mediums work visually — and you don’t need to. By discovering your strongest channel(s), you’ll:

  • Build confidence
  • Receive clearer messages
  • Reduce self-doubt
  • Strengthen your accuracy

And yes — with practice, you can develop all of them.

5. Self-Forgiveness: The Heart of Clear Mediumship

This step is often overlooked, yet it is one of the most important.

Forgiveness and grief are intertwined. Loss, change, and transition all require us to release what was.

When you hold anger, resentment, guilt, or shame — toward others or yourself — it distorts how you receive subtle energy. It can make you feel disconnected from spirit, or like your intuition has gone silent.

Self-forgiveness:

  • Clears the heart center
  • Softens the emotional body
  • Opens the channel to higher guidance
  • Allows you to connect with loved ones in spirit without distortion

When you forgive yourself, you naturally release others too. This is where the heart becomes a true vessel for spirit.

6. Practice & Journal Everything

Mediumship is a skill — and skills require practice. Try a variety of methods:

  • Guided meditations
  • Self-led meditation
  • Automatic writing
  • Cartomancy (cards)
  • Pendulum work
  • Runes
  • No tools at all

Start small. Follow what you’re drawn to. Let your practice unfold naturally.

But most importantly: Record everything.

Your journal entries will reveal:

  • Your hits
  • Your misses
  • Your patterns
  • Your strongest channels
  • Your growth over time

There is no “right” way to practice mediumship. There is only your way.

7. Work With Spirit in Balance

It’s easy to get swept up in the high vibration of spirit connection. But remember:

Your guides are here to support you — not run your life.

You are the one in the physical world. You are the one making choices. You are the one responsible for your path.

Daily connection is beautiful, but use it to empower your life, not escape it.

8. Consider a Spiritual Coach or Mentor

Especially if you want to practice professionally. A skilled mentor will:

  • Offer grounded guidance
  • Help you refine your gifts
  • Identify blind spots
  • Prevent bad habits
  • Strengthen your confidence
  • Support your ethical development
  • Provide real-world experience and perspective

Spirit is powerful — but so is having a human teacher who has walked the path before you.

A Final Word: Permission to Explore

Mediumship isn’t “woo woo.” It’s relational. It’s intentional. It’s energetic. And it’s deeply human. This is a natural part of our make up, and humanity has been practicing mediumship in some way, shape or form in every culture for thousands of years.

When you choose to partner with spirit — and upgrade your life accordingly — the universe responds. The energy you put out echoes back. The clarity you cultivate becomes the clarity you receive.

Becoming a medium, and a damn good one, doesn’t happen overnight. It requires devotion, respect, and care for yourself.

Spirit is always communicating. You simply have to tune in.

And when you follow this pathway, you’ll get there faster — and with more confidence — than you ever imagined.
